"Chula" has traditionally meant pretty or beautiful, especially in reference to a woman. It can be combined with "mami" to make "mami chula" or "papi chulo", sweet terms of endearment. Recently the masculine version has taken on a more vulgar sense. Where "chulo" before would just mean "cute" or "handsome", it now refers to a "pimp" or a man with many women.
